Top 5 Ways to Beat Procastination

When there is a task at hand, what do you do? Do you work on it right away? Or do you toss it aside and tell yourself, “I’ll do it later”? If your answer is the second option, then you are one of the millions who procrastinate every day.

Procrastination is the act of delaying a task until a much later time. Most people tend to procrastinate especially if they find a certain task unpleasant or overwhelming. This act can negatively affect your productivity and efficiency, and cause you to waste huge amounts of time. However, it is also very difficult to overcome, especially if it has become a part of your daily life.

So how do you get rid of a bad habit like procrastination? Here are some tips to help you:

  1. 1. Make a To-Do List. Most people end up procrastinating because they have so many things to do and they don’t know where to start. Making a to-do list will help you organize all your tasks according to levels of priority, so you can decide on what to do first. As you finish each task, tick it off your list. This will give you a sense of accomplishment and will help you focus on other tasks.
  2. 2. Set a time limit for your leisure activities. Leisure activities can help you relax and enjoy, but the more time you spend doing them, the less time you have to finish your tasks. So it is a good idea to limit your leisure activities to a specific time frame so that you can move on to more important things.
  3. 3. Break your task into chunks. If you find a task overwhelming, the best thing to do is to break them in smaller, manageable chunks. As you finish each chunk of work, you will gradually progress on the task until you complete it.
  4. 4. Set deadlines. Deadlines motivate you to finish your tasks on time. When you are aware that a task needs to be done before a certain time, you will more likely propel yourself to work. The trick here is to follow deadlines you set for yourself strictly so you will be able to work more efficiently.
  5. 5. Don’t underestimate the time needed to finish a task. A big mistake that most people make is put off a task because they think they’ll be able to do it in a shorter amount of time. Never do this because this will only cause you unnecessary stress. When you have a task, be realistic when allocating a time frame for it so you won’t have to resort to cramming in the end.

There are so many other ways to beat procrastination, but hopefully these tips have helped you get started. Remember, procrastination is not an easy thing to beat. It requires discipline, self-control and tons of perseverance. But if you set your mind to it, you will be able to overcome it eventually. If you’ve managed to avoid procrastinating on a certain task, don’t forget to reward yourself for a job well done!
